On December 25, the main work of the middle line of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project was completed. After the flood season of 2014, the middle line water channel will be officially put into use for water diversion. By then, people who live in the area along the water channel will drink water from Yangzi River.

The middle line water transfer project starts at the Danjiangkou Reservoir, and the water channel is excavated northward via Henan province, Hebei Province, Tianjing, Beijing and ends at Tuancheng Lake in the Summer Palace in Beijing.

Along the middle line, more than 2,500 buildings of varied functions were constructed. The 99 meters natural drop helps water flow to Beijing through the 1,103-kilometer-long open channel.

According to the plan, in the first phase of the middle line, the multi-year average quantity of water diversion is 9.5 billion cubic meters. It will be the water source of more than 100 towns and 19 large-and-medium-sized cities in four provinces and municipalities.

According to an official from Office of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Commission, water quality in the Danjiangkou Reservoir has reached or exceeded the national standard for class Ⅱwater for six consecutive years, and the water quality in the reservoir area has also reached the standard.

Calculations of Changjiang Water Resources Commission suggests that the total surface water of Hanjiang River basin is about 56.6 billion cubic meters, and the total surface water above Danjiangkou Reservoir is 38.8 cubic meters. Considering the water consumption of the upstream and downstream, there will be 20.3 billion cubic meters left, which fully satisfies the need of the planned water transfer of 9.7 billion cubic meters in the first phase.
