South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun said Monday he will hold serious discussions with US President George W. Bush during their summit in May on ways of resolving the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) nuclear issue in a peaceful manner.
In a speech during a ceremony in Seoul to see off the Iraq-bound non-combat troops, he noted that dialogue is crucial to peaceful solution of the issue, reported national news agency Yonhap News.
"I've been persuading the countries involved under the conviction that war should not occur," Roh said, adding "I've maintained the coherent principle of resolving the DPRK nuclear issue peacefully."
Roh also mentioned the just concluded Beijing talks on the nuclear issue attended by the United States, DPRK and China, saying the "initial stage" of dialogue among parts concerned has been kicked off.
Roh Moo-hyun also pledged that his government will firmly defend the peace and security of the nation at any cost, said Yonhap.
The South Korean president is to visit the United States in mid-May, during which he will hold his first meet with Bush after his inauguration in February.
At the same time, Roh Moo-hyun said his government has decided to offer 10 million US dollars worth of humanitarian aid to Iraq.
South Korean decided to send 673 engineering and medical troops to Iraq as demanded by the United States, and some 20 advanced personnel have already arrived in the war-torn country.
