Additional groups of the Chinese equivalent of the South Korea "Red Devils" cheer squad are flying into South Korea ahead of their national team's first World Cup group C match against Costa Rica, World Cup organizers said Monday.
A new group of 300 "Qiumis", a name given to Chinese soccer fans which literally means "soccer worshippers", arrived at the Incheon International Airport earlier today from Beijing.
They followed a group of 200 cheer squad members who entered the country the previous day after they traveled across China on motorcycles.
About 40,000 Chinese soccer fans are expected to stay in the country until China complete their first round matches on June 13.
One-quarter of the group is known as members of an elite cheer squad organized by the Beijing government to boost their footballers. "As many as 2,000 Chinese soccer fans arrived in the country yesterday and this morning. We expect some 4,000 Chinese will go and cheer their soccer squad in Gwangju tomorrow," an official at a Chinese World Cup management committee said.
China take on four-time World Cup champions Brazil Saturday in Seogwipo and Turkey on June 13 in Seoul.
