U.S. President George W. Bushhas decided to extend U.S. economic sanctions imposed on Libya in 1986 to January 7, 2003.

"The crisis between the United States and Libya that led to the declaration on January 7, 1986, of a national emergency has not been resolved," Bush said in a letter to U.S. Congress on Thursday.
