Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak flew to Tripoli Sunday for talks with Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi on the international situation.

Mubarak's visit was within the context of continued consultations between Mubarak and Arab leaders on the latest developments in the Middle East region and the world at large, Egypt's state-run MENA news agency reported, without elaborating.

The visit, which was not announced in advance, came after Mubarak met with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on the latest situation in the occupied Palestinian territories earlier in the day.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State William Burns and retired general Anthony Zinni are due in the Mideast region on Monday in a fresh diplomatic effort to help end the 14-month-old Palestinian- Israeli conflict, which has left nearly 1,000 people dead, most of them the Palestinians.
