Hexagonal Well is located within the residency of Zhuge Liang, functioning as the well for life purpose. A regular hexagon-shaped stone railing was added to circle the well in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). From then on, the 5-meter deep well has been called Hexagonal Well. The well was specifically recorded in History about Xiangyang and Commentary on the Waterways Classic authored by Xi Zaochi, a Xiangyang local historian in Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420), and Li Daoyuan respectively. Since the well has never changed its position throughout history, after Zhuge Liang’s residency in Longzhong was damaged later, the well stood out as the basis to judge the location of Zhuge’s thatched cottage. Though a time-honored well with more than 1,800 years of history, Hexagonal Well still remains a resource of the clear water.
