With 19 participating teams, China got all straight victories in the group stage and the semi-finals, and beat Chinese Taipei 52-42 in the semi-finals, and defeated South Korea 87-78 in the final, winning five consecutive Championships. This national team took part in the Olympic Games held in Atlanta in the following year, and reached the quarterfinals historically. The team comprising Sun Jun, Hu Weidong, Gong Xiaobin, Ba Te'er, Wang Zhizhi, Liu Yudong, Zheng Wu, Wu Qinglong and many other famous players, known as the 96 golden generation.
