Patrick Choy, vice president of WBF

Life is like a game of Bridge

PD Online: What is the attraction of bridge from your perspective?

Patrick Choy: Bridge is a game which needs cooperation and intelligence, and it is different from other games of mental activity such as Chess. When playing Bridge, you have to work with your partner - the one sitting across the table from you. There is very little that you are allowed to say during the game. However, your words are shared with your partner and your opponents at the same time. So it is critical to be able to distinguish between key information and words intended to mislead your opponents.

Life is like a game of Bridge - you cannot see all of the cards, and not everything happens in accordance with your expectations. However, you are not alone. You will meet different people during different phases of your life. You learn to work with others to form the best team.

PD Online: What are the special features of the World Bridge Series Championships?

Patrick Choy: The World Bridge Series Championships are open to all bridge players. Players are playing for themselves rather than representing their country. I could take part in the event – as of course could you, if you have the necessary level of skill. It is a good opportunity to meet players from all over the world, regardless of social status. Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have previously taken part in the World Bridge Series Championships. You can find yourself sharing a table with many other famous people, simply playing Bridge. Is that not amazing!

PD Online: What are your expectations for the continuing development of bridge in China?

Patrick Choy: There are about 500 million people who play cards in China. Bridge is a game that uses a standard 52-card deck and is played by four players in two competing partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other around a table. However, the Bridge-playing population is very limited here – imagine if even 10% of all card players played Bridge! However, the number of Bridge players is much lower than that. The game is very popular in Europe, especially as people get older, but with the help of media, more and more young people in China are getting to know Bridge and are playing in clubs, in tournaments, online, and with friends at home. Therefore, we see that Bridge has great potential in China.
