A special office number “711”
After he got bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Liaoning University and Doctor’s Degree in Peking University, Wang went to the physics institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), then to France and America for his post-doctorate research. In August, 1995, he went back to China and was invited to be a CAS researcher. Meanwhile, he was the first young physicist who returned to China in the “100-Talent Program” of the CAS.
As the domestic conditions of science and research were bad at that time, Wang, together with his colleagues, painted walls of their labs all by themselves. Wang had a habit of arriving at his office at 7:00 am and leaving at 11:00 pm every day, and this habit brought him a nickname “711”, which was also the room number he had chosen for his office. In 1992, 42-year-old Wang Enge became director of the physics institute of the CAS.
In 2009, Wang decided to take the office of president of the Physics School of Peking University and resigned all his administrative posts at the CAS. Wang explained this choice: “The goal of most significance in my heart is to rejuvenate physics at Peking University through our common hard working.”
Many teachers and students prefer to call Wang “Professor Enge” sincerely. However, Wang is very strict on students’ quality; therefore, there are some students who can’t get master’s degree or doctor’s degree in recent years, which has never happened before.
Wang said in his inaugural speech, “As a man, he must have a dream; as a country, it must have a dream; so it is the same with a university. It is the very dream of the whole Peking University to build a world class university. Empty talks would lead the course astray, and hard work can rejuvenate the university. I will try my best to be a dedicated president and do what I am supposed to do with most passions and responsible spirit.”
