The Serbian developed a reputation as something of a miracle worker after taking Rwanda to the African Nations Cup finals for the first time in 2004 and leading Ghana to last 16 at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Following these successes, Dujkovic signed a contract to coach China's Olympic team until the end of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Dujkovic recommended his former Belgrade Red Star teammate Vladimir Petrovic for the position of executive coach of the Chinese national senior team, which effectively resulted in two coaches taking the helm of China's national senior team.
The two-coach formula, with the national coach working under the guidance of the Olympic coach, ended in failure for both coaches.
Petrovic stepped down following China's defeat in the first round of qualification for the 2010 World Cup, while his compatriot Dujkovic was dropped as Olympic coach just three weeks before the start of the Beijing Games.
