People’s Daily Online: We are aware of that part of your trip this time is to open the third office in Guangzhou. Why Guangzhou is chosen and what is the future plan for ChinaSF to cooperate with China?
Mayor: We have been very successful in Shanghai and Beijing; Guangzhou is also very special to us, because most of the Chinese immigrants that come to San Francisco Bay area are from Guangdong Province. In fact I would say 75% of the Chinese are from that region. The affiliation has already been there for quite some time. We have had hundreds of thousands of visits back and forth. What we would like to do is seeing that GDP of Guangzhou is very strong; they may wish to also do investment in San Francisco, the Bay area. We would like to assist a Chinese cooperation on their quest for international market. We think that we can be of great success. We also believe that we are more conducive to Guangzhou for purposes of language, but also for food, entertainment, we have a very strong of presence in San Francisco. We think there will be a smooth transition, because people speak the similar language. There will be immediate trust when it comes to financial investment and understanding different financial instrument that are available.
People’s Daily Online: It is very interesting that People’s Daily Online has just established its branch in San Francisco. What do you think can this branch do to promote exchanges between China and U.S., and San Francisco and Chinese cities?
Mayor: I think it would be limitless, to be candid with you. For example, what I have done in my office is to set up special times for the Chinese press, because I believe that they have special questions about what I am doing as the mayor, but also policies of the city, and the state of the California. I think that Chinese people both abroad as well as in the whole Bay area are thirsting strongly for more specific information when it comes to everything from entertainment to economics, to politics, and to sports.
For example, I think people would want to understand what is Jeremy Lin doing, should he be a golden state lawyer or is he satisfied with being a Houston Rocket basketball player, when he came to San Francisco. For example, there were thousands of Chinese Americans; they came to the game to celebrate his participation in the American National Basketball Association, and he has very individual story to tell about his success and how to play basketball on a very competitive and high level sport. I think many people in China would want to know how someone plays at such a high level and what their experience is in their day-to-day life, just like the Chinese press in the local San Francisco Bay area wants to know the same thing, and I also think the American public itself. It is very interesting to know his opinion. This is only an example. There are areas of cuisine, cultural exchanges, talent, economic information; we know that all the challenges that occurred in our own country, we would also like to compare that with what happened in China.
