Developing the "Mingmen System" Through the Study of Classical TCM Texts

Mingmen is an important concept in classical traditional Chinese medicine theory. However, physicians throughout history have held divergent views on its location, functions and form.

Building on the consensus among generations of TCM practitioners that Mingmen is the root of life and the repository of innate yin and yang, Dr. Lin and his research team reexamined and systematized the traditional theory of Mingmen, proposing the “Mingmen System.”. “The core aim of various clinical treatments is to activate the body’s capacity for self-regulation, self-repair and self-healing—that is, to activate the Mingmen System. From this perspective, the human body itself possesses significant potential for repair,” Dr. Lin said. This accessible explanation helped participants from diverse cultural backgrounds understand the core concepts of the theory.

The "Sun Therapy": An Integrated Approach Combining Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Herbal Medicine

This conference emphasized translating academic theories into clinical practice. In his presentation, Dr. Lin introduced the “Sun Therapy,”an innovative acupuncture approach developed through extensive clinical practice.

The theory holds that depletion of Mingmen fire and internal accumulation of cold-dampness easily lead to pathological changes in the body. Interventions with acupuncture, moxibustion and Chinese herbal medicine act like supplying "sunlight" to the body, improving the internal environment and thereby reducing disease development.

Based on the Mingmen System, the research team formulated three practical approaches to unblock the system. This achieves synergistic effects of acupuncture, moxibustion and herbal medicine, creating an internal environment bathed in "sunlight".

Traceable Clinical Cases Spark Discussions among International Experts

Traceable clinical data are valuable for international academic exchanges. At this conference, Dr. Lin presented clinical cases supported by pathological and imaging data from tertiary hospitals in China, forming a complete and traceable evidence chain to demonstrate the practical value of the diagnostic and therapeutic system centered on the Mingmen System.

Participating experts noted that this approach, which focuses on mobilizing the body’s own repair capacity and seeks to reduce the need for invasive interventions, offers a perspective from traditional Chinese medicine for exploring treatment approaches for difficult-to-treat diseases.

According to the conference organizers, the World Federation of Manual Medicine was established in Hong Kong at the initiative of Wei Guikang, a National TCM Master, who serves as its founding chair. Academician Zhu Liguo serves as the chair, and Professor Chen Feng serves as the acting chair. The federation has members across more than 60 countries and regions worldwide. To date, it has organized 36 international academic conferences, attracting more than 20,000 participants in total. It continues to promote international exchanges, the preservation and inheritance of traditional practices, and innovation in manual medicine and traditional therapies. (Chang Xu)
