China warns of Japan's dangerous military agenda

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese defense spokesperson on Thursday warned of the dangerous agenda pursued by Japan's right-wing forces when commenting on the neighboring country's recent military actions.

Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, made the response to a series of military actions by Japan, including the planned expansion of Japan's Ministry of Defense, a plan to equip the country's unmanned underwater vehicle with long-range missiles, as well as an agreement between Japan and Australia on the test of its hypersonic missile in Australia.

Japan, as a defeated country of World War II, is prohibited from obtaining offensive weapons by the Potsdam Proclamation and Japan's pacifist Constitution itself. But in recent years the country has accelerated its "remilitarization" and openly expanded its military arsenal, Zhang said.

"As a warmongering and aggressive power in the past, Japan has never genuinely reflected on its historical crimes," Zhang said. "If it were allowed to rearm and become a 'war-capable state,' the tragic history may well repeat itself."

He called on the international community to firmly contain reckless moves of Japan's "neo-militarism" and resolutely safeguard regional peace and stability.
