Turpan: Where every color tells a story

In Turpan, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, colors tell the story of a city shaped by striking contrasts. Earthy Gobi landscapes, Yardang landforms and sun-baked mountains meet lush vineyards, where abundant sunshine helps produce the sweet grapes and raisins Turpan is known for. Traditional earthen homes and the city's famously hot climate add to its distinctive character.

Yet Turpan has its surprises, too. At the foot of the Flaming Mountains, cool water kept at around 10–18 degrees Celsius provides suitable conditions for cold-water salmon — an unexpected sight in this "City of Fire." Beyond its natural landscapes and local specialties, Turpan comes alive through its rich traditions, handicrafts, flavors and everyday customs. Every color reveals another side of this vibrant city.
