Wildlife thrives in nature reserve in NW China's Xinjiang

The Ganjiahu saxaul national nature reserve in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is teeming with lush vegetation and increasing numbers of wildlife spotted across its desert landscape.

Thanks to continued conservation efforts focused on ecological restoration as well as regular patrols and monitoring, the nature reserve features abundant water resources, well-connected waterways, and a stable wetland water area.

Wild saxaul trees, desert poplars, and tamarisks have expanded across the reserve, boosting vegetation cover and helping stabilize the desert landscape.

The improving ecosystem has also benefited the local wildlife. Infrared cameras have frequently captured rare animals moving through the forest, including goitered gazelles, red foxes and elks, while both water birds and migratory birds have been seen resting and foraging in the wetlands.
