Kenya woos Chinese investors to boost film sector

NAIROBI, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Kenya is intensifying efforts to develop its film industry by seeking increased investment and collaboration with Chinese investors, a government official said on Wednesday.

Sudi Wandabusi, chairperson of the Kenya Film Commission, told journalists in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that the East African nation is keen to tap into China's financial and technological support to emerge as a regional hub for film production.

"Through co-production with Chinese investors, we will also be able to showcase our movies in the vast Chinese market," Wandabusi said during a media briefing on the 14th edition of the Kalasha International Film and TV Market, Festival and Awards, which is scheduled to take place from April 28 to May 2.

The Kalasha International Film and TV Market, Festival and Awards is Kenya's premier film industry event, organized by the Kenya Film Commission to celebrate excellence, showcase local content, connect industry stakeholders, and promote Kenya as a regional film hub.

Wan Shaoguang, deputy general manager of China's Hunan TV International, noted the growing interest among Chinese investors in East Africa's entertainment sector.

Wan said that through joint film production, Kenyan filmmakers will gain greater exposure to Chinese audiences.
