House collapse amid heavy downpour claims 2 lives in western India
NEW DELHI, June 27 (Xinhua) -- A 65-year-old woman and an eight-year-old girl died, and another person was injured when a house collapsed amid heavy rains in India's western state of Rajasthan late Monday night, confirmed local police on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the state's Udaipur city, a popular tourist destination. The injured has been admitted to a hospital, and is undergoing treatment, a local police officer told Xinhua over the phone.
The house was quite old, and one of its walls collapsed. The ill-fated house was located in the Shreenathji Haveli area of Udaipur, according to the police officer.
Teams from Civil Defence, State Disaster Response Force, and the Fire Brigade carried out relief and rescue operations at the spot of the mishap.
Large parts of Rajasthan have been lashed by heavy rains over the past few days, resulting in rain-related deaths.
Besides, many other Indian states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, parts of Haryana and Punjab, have been receiving incessant rains over the past few days, with at least six deaths reported in Himachal Pradesh.
Also, the northeastern state of Assam has been witnessing floods for nearly two weeks now, with many villages still inundated.
