China would take "strong and resolute measures" to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, the foreign ministry said on Thursday.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a routine press briefing in Beijing when asked to comment on the meeting between US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen in the US.

"The US connives with Taiwan to allow the 'Taiwan independence' separatists' political activities in the US, conduct official contact with Taiwan, upgrade the substantive relations with Taiwan and frame it as a transit," Mao said.

It was a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, she said.

"China will take strong and resolute measures to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Mao said.
