The first official meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol in Bali, Indonesia would be of "great significance," China's foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

"This will be the first official meeting between the two heads of state and will bear great significance," Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing.

"The two sides will have an in-depth exchange of views on China-South Korea relations and issues of shared interest."

China and the Republic of Korea are close neighbors and important cooperation partners, Mao said.

"To advance the sound and steady growth of bilateral relations is in the shared interest of both sides," she said. "We hope this meeting will produce positive outcomes and chart the course and provide the impetus for the future growth of China-Republic of Korea relations."
