The huge amount of money raised by a father for his daughter’s leukemia treatment has triggered even more controversy, as some netizens speculate that the campaign may be a marketing campaign or even a outright fraud.
On the morning of Dec. 1, Luo announced through the peer-to-peer lending company of his friend, Liu Xiafeng, that he had raised 2.7 million RMB ($390,000) from social media users. Luo and Liu said in a statement that they would use all the donations to launch a leukemia foundation, and later apply for funds from the foundation for Luo's daughter's treatment.
Hours later, at 4 p.m., WeChat announced that all the money raised through its platform will be returned to donors within three days. Luo told the Beijing News that he initially planned to donate the money, but after discussions with various parties, he felt it was better to return the money to donors. For the treatment of his daughter, he will "find a solution.”
Wen Fang, Luo's wife, stated earlier that she and her husband are not liars, and did not use any of the donated money. Wen said she has no problem giving the money back if that's what donors want.
