Eighteen-year-old Xu Yuyu was admitted to Nanjing Post and Communications University as an incoming freshman this September. However, she was cheated out of her tuition money through a phone scam on Aug. 19. Realizing that she had been swindled, the girl suffered from a sudden cardiac arrest. Xu died in the hospital on Aug. 21.

According to Yimeng Evening news, Xu was an outstanding student. She achieved a high score of 568 on this year's college entrance examination. However, because her mother is handicapped, the whole family lives on Xu's father's slender income. It had taken the family a year to pinch and scrape together the 9,900 yuan for Xu's tuition.

On the afternoon of Aug. 19, Xu received a phone call from a stranger, who claimed to be from the local education department. The caller offered Xu a grant of 2,600 yuan. Recalling that she had applied for a student subsidy from the education department, who had told her the money would be sent to her in several days, neither Xu nor her family found any reason to be suspicious of the call.

Following the instructions of the fraudster, Xu transferred her tuition money to the bank account provided. Xu was devastated when she realized that she had been the victim of a scam. Xu and her family immediately reported the incident to police. On their way back from the police station, Xu suddenly became unconscious. After being brought to the hospital, she was found to have experienced a cardiac arrest. After two days of treatment, she died on Aug. 21.

The case is still under investigation by the local police department.
