Armored car knocks down sanitation worker, netizens decry mercenary attitude

By Zhang Tianrui (People's Daily Online)    16:12, August 23, 2016

On Aug. 21, an armored cash transportation vehicle in Shaanxi's Wuqi County ran into a sanitation worker, knocking the woman over. After the collision, rather than coming to the worker's aid and helping her get to the hospital, the car's driver rushed to transfer and secure the money inside the vehicle.

This accident was recorded and uploaded by several bystanders. After watching the incident unfold on video, some netizens have criticized what they view as the armored car's driver's indifference to human life, while others have said the driver should have called for the police or an ambulance, not being a trained medic.

On Aug. 22, an executive officer of the armored car company surnamed Qi explained that the truck had unintentionally knocked the sanitation worker over while backing up.

"According to the video, two minutes after the accident, the driver dialed 120 and 110[China's emergency numbers]," Qi said. After the accident, lacking basic rescue skills, the armored truck driver opted not to move the injured worker so as to avoid causing secondary injuries.

"The accident happened in the downtown area, and we have emergency protocols in place. Ensuring the safety of the injured, we also need to consider transferring the cargo in a secure fashion. This consideration is what netizens observed in the video," Qi explained, adding that the injured worker is currently receiving medical care, and that the armored car company will cooperate fully with traffic police on the investigation.

A witness named Zhu said she was walking out of a nearby alley and was startled to see a person lying under the armored vehicle.

"Someone shouted about having knocked a person over, and the vehicle stopped. The injured woman was under the truck. Then spectators began to move the vehicle," Zhu described. "There were many spectators, but we had no idea how to help the injured worker. The police and an ambulance came 10 minutes later."

The police also confirmed the events of this accident on their official Weibo account. The injured sanitation worker, surnamed Yang, suffers from a fractured pelvis and another fracture in her left hand. Yang is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
