A man named Zhang Feng started his bicycle trip to Tibet on Thursday, Aug. 18. Starting from Chengdu, the 2,100-kilometer trip will take the 27-year-old and three friends more than 20 days to complete.
Zhang, who hails from Tongchuan, Shaanxi province, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May. He was given six months to live. Nevertheless, believing in miracles, Zhang decided to keep a positive attitude. He kept his spirits up by planning the trip to Tibet, which he views as a welcome challenge and also as a way to encourage other patients to stay hopeful and active.
At first, Zhang's family opposed his plan, worrying about his health. They only agreed after Zhang teamed up with three friends. One of those friends, nicknamed "Banana," actually quit his job in order to make the journey with Zhang. He also plans to film and produce a documentary about their trip.
Zhang says his biggest regret is that he hasn't yet married and had kids. A big fan of Michael Jackson, Zhang wants his funeral to feature the music of the late pop star. However, never willing to give up entirely, Zhang also says he will give a concert after he gets back from Tibet, and hopes to find a girlfriend if he survives the disease.
