After a serious storm, a Shaanxi woman lost contact with her family, prompting them to post a notice searching for her on social media. A villager living in Shanxi, over 200 kilometers away from Shaanxi, found the woman's corpse and offered it to the family, but only if they paid 100,000 yuan. So far, unable to provide the money, the woman's family has not received their loved one's body.

Around 11 a.m. on Aug. 14, the victim, Wang went into town to do some shopping. When evening fell and she still had not returned, Wang's family began to wonder where she could be. Early in the morning on Aug. 15, Wang's family asked fellow villagers for help. After a search party came across Wang's shoes and bag, the family guessed that Wang had been carried away by the mountain torrents. Wang's family reported her disappearance to the police and posted a notice on social media, hoping for more information. Soon, someone from Shanxi contacted Wang's family and claimed to have found Wang's corpse.

After viewing a photo of the body in Shanxi, Wang's brother offered preliminary confirmation that the corpse did in fact belong to Wang. On the morning of Aug. 17, Wang's family and their village cadres arrived at the village of Nanzhuang in Shanxi's Yonghe County.

"We prepared 30,000 yuan to demonstrate our gratitude, but the villager who found the body demanded more. We then offered 60,000 yuan, but the villager insisted on no less than 100,000 yuan," explained Qiao Xiaojun, Wang's brother-in-law.

Wang's family requested help from the local government and police.

"After negotiations, the villager finally agreed to 60,000 yuan. However, after consulting with legal specialists, we no longer think that requirement is reasonable," Qiao said.

"Expressing thanks to the person who found the corpse makes sense. However, asking an impoverished family for 100,000 yuan in exchange for the corpse is perverse," opined Guo Yaowen, Secretary of the Party Committee of Jia County in Shaanxi.

The victim's 42-year-old husband is blind, and they have a teenage daughter. The family receives government aid because of their low income level.
