

Aug. 17 marked this year’s Ghost Festival, or Zhong Yuan Jie, a traditional Chinese holiday that honors the deceased. The festival takes place every year on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month.

One of the most picturesque customs surrounding the festival is the floating of lit “lotus lanterns,” which are meant to guide the wandering ghosts of the dead. Other customs include burning incense and putting out food for the hungry ghosts.
