On Zhengzhou's B13 bus line, the act of giving up one's seat could now be worth 5 million yuan, China National Radio reported on Aug. 13.

Bus driver Yu Liqiang told a reporter from China National Radio that he has driven buses for over 10 years. Over those years, he believes passengers have become more and more civilized and helpful. The lottery activity is Yu's way of encouraging that behavior even more.

Yu is a shift leader of the B13 bus line. Recently, his group was recognized as last quarter's most outstanding team, earning them 300 yuan in prize money. After a discussion among the group members, they decided to use their prize to buy 150 lottery tickets and give them out to deserving passengers on Aug. 11 and 12. They mounted posters explaining that anyone who offered his or her seat to an elderly, sick or disabled passenger, or who helped one of these passengers get on or off the bus, would be rewarded with a lottery ticket.

One woman, who offered her seat to a senior citizen, was pleasantly surprised when Yu handed her the lottery ticket. She said that offering one's seat to someone who needs it is a beautiful thing to do, and she is happy to do her part in building a better city.
