China is facing a grim reality when it comes to chronic diseases in the country, which cause 86.6 percent of deaths in China, according to experts at a recent symposium in Beijing.
"The incidence of chronic disease has risen rapidly in recent years," said Wang Longde, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, adding that it has become an imminent task to prevent and control chronic diseases, which account for nearly 70 percent of China’s current medical burden.
According to experts, there are four main types of chronic diseases: cardiovascular diseases, cancer, respiratory diseases and diabetes. These diseases cause damage to vital organs including the brain, heart and kidney, and can easily lead to disabilities, which affect people’s ability to work and bring with them huge treatment costs.
Statistics show that China now has nearly 300 million patients with chronic diseases, half of who are under 65 years of age. Chronic diseases have become the leading cause of death among both urban and rural residents,
A World Health Organization survey shows that risk factors for chronic diseases depend largely on an individual's lifestyle, but they can also arise from genetics, medical conditions, social conditions and other factors. Unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco and alcohol are four major risk factors for chronic diseases.
To help prevent chronic diseases, Wang recommended that people exercise at least three times a week, for at least half an hour each time. It is also necessary to maintain a balanced diet that adheres to China’s recommendations for intake of each food group. People should moderate their intake of animal products while increasing their intake of fruits, vegetables, soy and dairy products.
