A naturally conceived giant panda cub has been born in Vienna, the city’s main zoo announced on Aug. 8. Natural conception is a very rare event in most panda breeding centers, which is why the majority resort to artificial insemination.
The cub's sex is not yet known. Born to mother Yang Yang and father Long Hui, the cub is just 10 centimeters long and weighs 100 grams, according to a statement on the official website of Tiergarten Schoenbrunn Zoo.
Pictures and video footage released by the zoo show the tiny pink newborn clinging to its mother, who has previously given birth to three other naturally conceived cubs. Yang Yang's other cubs, Fu Long, Fu Hu and Fu Bao, are now in China, where an estimated 1,864 giant pandas are left in the wild.
A spokeswoman for the zoo said that the panda will be named after 100 days. Now, after its latest addition, the zoo's panda area is being kept closed so that Yang Yang can care for her cub in peace. Long Hui is being kept away for the cub's safety.
