Several essential services have recently started operation on Yongxing Island, the largest of the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea.
A sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 1,800 tons of sewage per day has opened. All the sewage on the island will be collected through a 9,241-meter sewage pipe network. Currently, the plant collects 800 tons of sewage daily, and produces 680 tons of reclaimed water that will be used for fire fighting, irrigation and construction work.
In addition, waste disposal services have started on the island. Garbage can be classified into seven categories, and is centralized prior to treatment.
To protect groundwater resources, a seawater desalination plant is in the final stages of construction. It is estimated that the factory will begin official operations at the end of August.
