GUIYANG, July 4 -- At least one person has been killed and another 10 are missing after torrential rain hit southwest China's Guizhou Province, local authorities said on Monday.

Heavy rain has hit more than 100 townships in the province since early Sunday, affecting about 79,000 people, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.

Nearly 30,000 people have been relocated while 184 houses were toppled. Direct economic losses have been estimated at 330 million yuan, the headquarters said.

The only death reported was in Zhenfeng County. Seven villagers went missing after a rain-triggered landslide occurred in Wanshan District of Tongchuan City at 2 a.m. Another three people were reported missing after heavy rain flooded their homes.

Further rescue work is under way.

China's meteorological authority renewed its orange alert for heavy rain in the south and southwest of the country on Monday, saying heavy rain will hit the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guizhou, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region until Tuesday morning, with precipitation reaching 200 millimeters in some areas.

China has a four-tier color-coded system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
