A 55-year-old urban management officer named Zhang Huailiang from Beijing has donated his blood 153 times and embraced his 154th donation on Tuesday, the World Blood Donor Day, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Tuesday. Blood donation has now become a part of Zhang's life.
According to Zhang, he missed the chance to donate his blood to his comrade-in-arms when he served in the army due to their different blood types. It has become a regret for him. In order to remedy it, when he was demobilized and returned to Beijing, he immediately started to participate in the blood donation organized by his company in 1987.
Ten years later, he was transferred to the Beijing urban management department and became one in the first batch of officers in Beijing. The department had asked for blood donation every month, and he never passed the opportunity.
However, the monthly donation task at the Beijing urban management department was cancelled in 2006, so Zhang started platelet donation ever since, believing that it could be a way to help more people.
It's easy to do a good deed, but it's not easy to keep doing so, said Zhang in the interview. He wishes to contribute to society by blood donation, calling it a faith and belief for him.
All his certificates and awards earned from blood donation are stored in his office, and he has left no such things regarding blood donation in his house. Since Zhang’s wife had been worrying about his health, he moved all the stuff related to blood donation into his office.
The upper age limit for blood donation has been raised to 60 from the previous age of 55, according to a document issued by China's Ministry of Health in 2012. The 55-year-old man said he would keep donating until he reaches the upper age limit.
