Beijing has launched China’s first campaign to promote all gender toilets on a larger scale and has so far established such facilities in some 30 venues, including NGO offices, bars and coffee shops.

Several bars on Gulou East Street in Dongcheng district of Beijing have put up all gender toilet signs featuring a third half man-half woman-looking sign just beside a man and a woman logo. The UN Women and UN Development Program offices in Beijing have also put up the new signs, several Beijing-based media outlets revealed recently.

Such toilets will be gender friendly and all people, regardless of their gender distinctions, can use such facilities. China began to see similar toilets with no clear gender distinction at some scenic spots in recent years, including in north China’s Hebei province and southwest China’s Chongqing, but it is the first campaign to promote such public facilities on a larger scale, according to Beijing-based NGO Beijing Gender Health Education Institute (BGHEI), which initiated the campaign.

The BGHEI will later work to issue a city map to mark out all public venues with all gender toilets.

Transgender groups or parents with children of different genders can use the all gender toilets to prevent embarrassing themselves or others, said Yang Gang, a person in charge of the campaign.
