According to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, this year may see heavy flooding in many places around China.
Since officially entering the flood season, the national average precipitation in China has been 130 millimeters, 23 percent higher than the average from last year. So far, 14 heavy rainfalls have hit most of the Yangtze River basin, as well as south and southwest China. With so much extra rain, 118 rivers, including Xiangjiang, Ganjiang and Minjiang Rivers, have already risen above the flood alarm level. The situation is worse than it has been in five years.
Currently, the water levels of the Yangtze, Huaihe and Xijiang Rivers, as well as that of Taihu Lake, are 0.32 to 3.17 meters higher than last year's average. At the middle and lower Yangtze River, Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake, water levels are 2.49 to 3.26 meters higher than average, but still lower than the flood alarm level.
According to Zhang Jiatuan, a spokesman for the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, since China has had more rainfall this flood season, heavy floods are mostly likely to occur in the Yangtze, Songhua, Huaihe and Xijiang Rivers.
