China’s oceanic eco-systems are in a generally stable situation in 2015, 94 percent of the waters in sovereignty meets the first-class sea water quality standard. However, some offshore waters have been severely polluted, and 76 percent of the oceanic eco-systems have been in either sub-healthy status, and 10 percent in unhealthy status, according to a report released by State Oceanic Administration recently.
The bright side is that China’s ocean biodiversity remains in a stable condition. Sea water and sediments are reportedly in good quality. The number of red tides declined in 2015 to a total of 35, down 38 percent from the year before, said the report.
The report added that the quality of sea water near 88 percent of pollution discharge points along the coast failed to meet environmental requirements.
