With strong determination, a young paraplegic woman from Hubei province recently published her 250,000-word autobiography.
The woman, named Li Yujie, was diagnosed with rheumatism when she was 7 years old, but she has never let her diagnosis get in the way of her optimism and admirable work ethic. She maintained good grades in school, but had to drop out when she was 14. She was depressed for some time, but never stopped making plans and setting goals for herself.
Li discovered a passion for reading and writing the year after she left school. She composed her first article about her experiences growing up and published it in a literary magazine, which encouraged her and gave her the confidence to write more.
With her deformed fingers, it takes Li a long time to physically write her articles. Even so, she has won the first-place prize of a national young writers competition three times. Li also independently studied three years of a college curriculum .
Li’s autobiography was finally published with help from volunteers, the local government and a few private enterprises. Her book is titled “Dream That Lies Above 110 Centimeters,” since 110 centimeters is her height when she sits in a wheelchair. Li’s book has been praised as inspiring and full of positive energy. She says the best way to deal with her disability is to shake off the restraints as much as possible and pursue her dreams.
To give back, Li also works as a psychology instructor at several local schools, including the one she used to attend. Through face-to-face or online communication, she inspires young people through her experiences.
