China to run 'red-eye bullet trains' on regular basis

(People's Daily Online)    13:16, March 02, 2016

China is going to introduce "red-eye bullet trains" that can run during nighttime on a regular basis in 2016, in an effort to boost railway operating efficiency, according to a Caixin report on Wednesday, quoting source from China Railway Corporation.

Previously, due to lack of operating experience, China's bullet trains are mostly run during day time. "Red-eye high speed trains" have only been put into trial use on a small scale during Spring Festival travel rushes to ease traffic pressure.

China Railway has accumulated rich experience after operating high speed trains for nearly a decade, plus the previous trial runs, the Chinese railway operator is well capable of guaranteeing the safety of the nighttime operation, the source told Caixin.

The red-eye train speed will not exceed 250 km/h upon launching, and is expected to be raised to 350 km/h after the operation enters a mature phase, the source disclosed.
