According to an American study, women who eat too much fish during pregnancy have a higher risk of giving birth to overweight babies.

In the report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on February 15.2016, children are more likely to experience rapid growth and obesity if the pregnant mothers eat fish more than three times a week.

The research also indicated that eating too much fish during pregnancy will have more influence on the weight of baby girls than on baby boys. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recommend that pregnant women should eat fish no more than three times a week.

The research, directed by doctor Leda Chatzi at the University of Crete, has analyzed the data of 26,000 pregnant women and their children in European and American countries. In addition to collecting the weekly fish intake of pregnant women, researchers also followed the growth of their children up to the age of six.

This research only showed the link between pregnant women's consumption of fish and babies' obesity problems, but the causality between them has never been conclusively proved. Experts will undertake more researches on this issue.
