30-year-old Mr. Chen was introduced to Miss Liu in 2010. They got married in 2011 and had a child in 2013. The family that was supposed to be happy and harmonious broke down in December 2015. Mr. Chen filed for divorce to the court due to his shopaholic wife having debts of 0.3 million yuan across nine credit cards.
In 2013, Miss Liu took out her first ever credit card. The expenditure gradually extended far beyond her future income. To satisfy the purchasing desire and repay the debts in time, Liu took out a second credit. Over the next three to four years, Liu got a total of nine credit cards in nine banks. She even obtained loans from two small companies and eventually accumulated 0.3 million yuan of debt.
Every time her husband asked her about this, she told him that there was little debt — a few tens of thousands yuan — until the case was exposed at the end of 2015.
Through the mediation of court, Mr. Chen agreed to pay 130,000 yuan on behalf of his wife. The remaining debts were taken on by Liu's parents due to her having no stable source of income.
