By Joanna Law (People's Daily Online)    23:40, February 04, 2016

A male Jankowski's bunting was spotted at beginning of 2016 in Beijing.

One of the world’s most precious species Jankowski's bunting has been seen in Beijing recently, making its reappearance in the city after 70 years.

Jankowski's bunting or rufous-backed bunting is a species of bird in the Emberizidae family. It is found in China, North Korea, and Russia where its natural habitats are temperate shrubland and grassland. It is estimated that less than 1,000 Jankowski's buntings are left in the world due to habitat loss.

A female Jankowski's bunting was spotted at beginning of 2016 in Beijing.

One of its unqiue characteristics is the brown spots on its belly. Jankowski's bunting was last seen in Beijing during the spring of 1941.
