Xu Jiehua, a 66-year-old retiree, dug out a batch of yams weighing 9 kilograms in his father’s garden in Chengdu city, southwest China.
Xu and his wife were about to clean his father’s house on Jan. 30 when they noticed the vine of the yam planted last April were all withered. So they found tools and dug out the giant twin yam.
“We were so excited! Weighing 9 kilograms, the twin yams would make another tasty dish for the Lunar New Year feast when the family reunited,” Xu said.
Since they planted the yam themselves, it is 100 percent natural and contians zero chemical substance, Xu added.
The yam is under the Dioscorea opposita species which are usually planted in dry and barren soil.
