Zhouzhuang is a small town in Kunshan city, east China's Jiangsu province. It enjoys the honor of 'No. 1 water village of China' and is on the list of the national Five-A grade scenic spots.
In the middle of 1980s, there were no motor vehicles in Zhouzhuang, the ancient town with several hundred years' history. Surrounded by water in four directions, people in this small town connected with the outside world by taking boats. Thus the primeval style is preserved well here and row upon row of buildings built in Ming and Qing dynasties of ancient China can be seen in the town.
As one of the ancient operas in China, Kun Opera, the opera with a history of over 600 years, originated in Kunshan at the end of Yuan Dynasty. Kun Opera was named the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations in 2001. Professional performers are regularly invited to Zhouzhuang where visitors can enjoy their fantastic performances.
