TAIPEI, Jan. 25 -- Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) party on Monday unveiled rules and a schedule for election of its chair after former chairman Eric Chu resigned after an electoral defeat earlier this month.

The KMT said in a statement on its website that candidate registration will be held Feb. 22 and the electoral campaign will last from March 1 to 25.

The vote for party chair is scheduled for March 26 and the result will be released the following day, the statement said.

At least four KMT members have announced they will run for the party's top position, including Hau Lung-bin, a former KMT vice chairman, and deputy speaker of the island's legislature Hung Hsiu-chu.

Former chairman Eric Chu resigned after he lost in the island's leadership election to Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party on Jan. 16.
