The world's first deep sea mining equipment for commercial use has been independently developed by Specialist Machine Developments (SMD). The equipment recently finished its land-based testing in Newcastle, Science and Technology Daily reports on Tuesday.

After being put into use, the device is expected to help with the harvest of deep sea ore. The deep sea mining machine is one of the core pieces of equipment necessary for the task, together with the cutting machine and collecting machine.

The equipment developed by SMD weighs more than 310 tons. It boasts the world's most powerful underwater mining equipment, with two megawatts of power. The equipment integrates the company's advanced technology in the fields of underwater oil and gas, trenching and cable laying.

Deep sea sulfide is located in the seabed. This equipment is custom-made to work 2,000 meters under the water, said the vice-CEO of SMC.

In April of 2016, SMD was acquired by Zhuzhou CSR Times Electric Co., which is a subsidiary of CRRC Zhouzhou Institute.

Currently, it is planned for the device to undergo underwater testing in the Gulf of Oman in the Arabian Sea in the first half of 2016. After that, it will be delivered to a company in North America.
