A Chinese man named Zeng Aiyun will receive compensation of about 1.27 million yuan. After spending more than 11 years behind bars due to a murder conviction, Zeng was finally found innocent, according to a statement made by a court in central China's Hunan province.
Zeng, once a graduate student at Xiangtan University in Hunan, was convicted of murder in 2004 by the Xiangtan Intermediate People's Court.
He was sentenced to death three times. Each time, the People’s Supreme Court rejected the verdict and ordered a retrial.
Zeng, now 38 years old, was finally acquitted by the court on July 21 of this year, after spending 11 years and 9 months (a total of 4,382 days) in prison.
Zeng then claimed compensation on Nov. 12, which was approved by the Xiangtan Intermediate People's Court.
The compensation, totaling 1,272,928.65 yuan, included compensation for violation of personal freedom, moral damage and seizure of property.
