WUZHEN, Zhejiang Province, Dec. 16 -- All countries should jointly oppose Internet surveillance and attacks or an arms race in cyberspace, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Second World Internet Conference held in the river town of Wuzhen, east China's Zhejiang, Xi said cyber security is a global challenge, and no country can remain aloof or immune to it.

Maintaining cyber security is a shared responsibility for the international community and countries should join hands to contain the abuse of information technology, he said.

China will work with all other countries to step up dialogue and exchanges and effectively manage differences.

"We should push forward the formulation of international cyberspace rules accepted by all parties and establish international conventions against terrorism in cyberspace, improve the legal assistance mechanism to fight cyber crimes and jointly uphold peace and security in cyberspace," Xi said.
