Infectious diseases kill 1,639 in China in Nov.

BEIJING, Dec. 10 -- A total of 1,639 people died as a result of infectious diseases on the Chinese mainland in November 2015, according to official data revealed on Thursday.

Last month, 519,285 people tested positive for infectious diseases on the mainland, said the National Health and Family Planning Commission.

Of the total, 285,086 cases were Class B infectious diseases, which resulted in 1,634 deaths. Hepatitis, tuberculosis, syphilis, gonorrhea and schistosomiasis accounted for 90 percent of cases in this category.

Category C diseases were responsible for 234,199 cases and five deaths. Foot-and-mouth disease, infectious diarrhea, and mumps were the most prevalent in this category.

No cases of plague or cholera were reported. Both diseases are categorized as Class A infectious diseases, under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases.
