The Hollywood movie The Martian had a premier press conference in Beijing on Nov. 20, 2015. Director Ridley Scott, actors Matt Damon, Sebastian Stan and Chinese actress Chen Shu all attended the premier.

In the movie The Martian, Chen Shu is an officer at the China National Space Administration who offers help to NASA at a critical moment and saves the astronaut stranded on Mars. At Twentieth Century Fox and Tencent QQ’s joint promotional strategy press conference, Sirena Liu, CEO of Twentieth Century Fox in China, said that besides Chen Shu, other Chinese actresses like Fan Bingbing and Angelababy will also take roles in Hollywood movies.

In the early 1980s, the founder of Twentieth Century Fox, Mr. Murdoch, gave several movies like General Patton and The Sound of Music to China Central Television through the Australian embassy. With the rapid development of the Chinese film industry, Twentieth Century Fox started to pay more attention to the Chinese market, hoping to have more cooperation with Chinese companies.

The Martian recently had a trial cooperation with China’s Tencent QQ; the latter offered emojis and backgrounds from the movie, which turned out to be surprisingly popular with QQ users. A manager of Tencent QQ, Li Dan, notes that there is a lot of potential for combining movies with social networks. Through the platform of QQ, the joy of watching a movie can be extended. He also says that entertainment social strategy is only beginning. There will be more cooperation between the two in the future.

As for the fact that more and more Chinese actress are appearing in Hollywood movies, Liu explains that it is not to intentionally flatter Chinese audience, but rather that there is a Chinese woman character written in the original script. “We respect the Chinese movie market very much,” said Liu.
