The 2015 Technology Roadmap on Key Sectors for "Made in China 2025" unveils the development path for the energy-saving and new-energy automobile manufacturing sector. The roadmap was released recently for the purpose of transforming the economy from low-end manufacturing to more value-added production.

China will focus on manufacturing energy-saving cars, new-energy cars and connected cars, according to the roadmap.

Great efforts will be put into manufacturing hybrid cars and alternative fuel cars to achieve the goal of keeping the fuel consumption of new passenger cars below 5L/100km by 2020 and below 4L/100km by 2025, said Fu Yuwu, director of Society of Automotive Engineers of China.

China set up a goal for the development of China-made new energy vehicles in the roadmap. For instance, the roadmap stipulates by 2025, the annual sales of new-energy cars will reach 3 million units, 80 percent of which are manufactured by independently owned automobile manufacturers. It shows China wants to improve the competitiveness of the Chinese car brands and transform China into a leading automobile manufacturing power, said Liu Zongwei, associate research fellow in Tsinghua University.

China should prioritize the development of self-owned electric drive systems, fuel cell systems and the other four key car parts in the energy-saving and new-energy automobile manufacturing sector, according to the 2015 guide on the development of key and generic technologies for this sector released by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
