Some Turkish fans booed and chanted “Allah Huakbar” during the minute of silence for the victims of the recent Paris attacks, before Tuesday’s Greece vs. Turkey friendly match in Istanbul. Daily Mail reports November 17, 2015.
The chant of ‘Allahu Akbar’ was audible as players from both sides stood silently in the center circle before the kick-off.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras were both at the scene watching the friendly, and witnessed the chaos on the spot.
“Allahu Akbar” is an Islamic phrase meaning “God is great”. While the phrase itself does not take offence, it is usually only used during Muslim religious occasions, or else seen on news media as a battle cry of the religious extremists.
Considering the recency of the Paris attack, the Turkish fans’ behavior was perceived by many as a shameful act.
“Our fans should have behaved during the one minute silence.” said Fatih Terim, the Turkey manager.
The friendly ended in a goalless draw.
