The two doctors travel from Suzhou to Tianjin to donate Type B RH negative blood.
At 1 am, Oct.27, head nurse at Suzhou University’s Ruihua Hospital, Li Xue, saw on social media that a person in Tianjin was looking for help from people with Type B RH negative blood as his friend's relative was in desperate need of a blood transfusion.
Li Xue thought of Liu Hailiang, a doctor who worked in the same hospital, whom she knew to have Type B RH negative blood. Li immediately contacted Liu. After half an hour, he replied that he would like to donate blood.
Liu asked for a leave from the director of his division and the senior officials in the hospital agreed to send Liu to Suzhou North Railway Station by a car provided by the hospital. Liu contacted his former colleague Zhou Li who also has Type B RH negative blood.
Zhou Li agreed to donate blood when she got a call from Liu, according to Li Xue. Liu Hailiang and Zhou Li took the train from Suzhou to Tianjin arriving at 10:21 PM that night, Oct.27, 2015.
A relative of the patient in need met Zhou Li and Liu Hailiang at the station and took them to a hotel near the hospital where the patient was. It was already 1am the next day by the time they checked it.
Zhou Li and Liu Hailiang arrived at the hospital at 7 a.m, Oct. 28, 2015. Liu Hailiang donated 400 millilitres of blood and Zhou Li 300 millilitres.
The female patient received the blood transfusion from Zhou Li and Liu Hailiang and saw her condition stabilize. Her brother told the reporter with Yangtze Evening News that his sister had been running a small business with her husband. Two years ago, his sister was diagnosed with lupus erythematosus and had been relying on medicines to sustain her life. Several days ago, her condition deteriorated.
The nurses found out that his sister has Type B RH negative blood when they wanted to provide a blood infusion for her, according to the patient's brother. The relatives and friends of the patient had no choice but to seek help through the WeChat Friend's circle as they cannot get Type B RH negative blood either from the hospital or the local blood bank.
